VW campervans are rarely standard, so the cover should not be either
- Factory and third-party conversions
- Pop tops, refits and remaps
- Leisure use, not just a van policy
- Classic T2 and T25 models too
What Is VW T5 Insurance?
The Volkswagen Transporter series has earned a deserved reputation for reliability, an enjoyable driving experience and overall performance. Over time these qualities have made the VW T5 Transporter hugely popular in the UK for both commercial and leisure use.
The VW Transporter remains one of the most popular campervans on UK roads, with the T4, T5 and T6 the best-known models. VW T5 insurance is campervan cover for these vans when they are used as a camper, rather than as a working van.
For owners of older models, our guide to classic campervan insurance is an informative read.
VW Campervan Insurance: What to Watch For
- Don’t insure your VW camper under a normal van or car policy. Yes, you are satisfying the law, but isn’t your campervan much more than a van?
- Don’t buy on price alone. A cheap policy may look attractive at first, but if you need to make a claim and find out you are not covered, it will not be a good day.
- Never assume everything is included. Take the time to read the policy documents carefully and make sure the cover will meet your expectations.
- Think about comprehensive cover. VW T5 campers are expensive, so fully comprehensive cover is worth considering to protect what your Volkswagen is worth.
Finding VW T5 Insurance Can Be Difficult
As you choose a VW T5 insurance policy for your beloved camper, it is critical to read the full cover, because the small print is where you find out whether you are getting the cover you actually need.
VW campervan owners have often had problems getting insurance for a T25 or other models. Some insurers that cover Volkswagen vans will not quote for a campervan, especially when it is actually being used as a camper.
If you own a T25 or T4 VW camper, insuring it with the right kind of campervan policy is critical, and there are several things to consider before choosing one. Top of the list is making sure your VW is insured for what you will actually be using it for.
With VW campervans there is a lot of individuality on display. A great many are non-standard, having been through conversions, refits and customisations, and that can rule out some standard insurers who prefer to avoid self build or modified vans.
With so many VW camper variants over a long period, it can get confusing. In summary, the T25 followed on from the T1 and T2, and is known as the T3 in Europe. Like all German motors, the T25 can still be seen cruising the roads of the UK and Europe. For these retro and iconic models, see classic campervan insurance.
Popular VW T5 Modifications
The VW lets you personalise your campervan with easy modifications. Some of the most popular include the following. Whatever you fit, declare it to your insurer.
Pop Top Bed
A pop top roof conversion adds a bed and standing room.
Audio and Entertainment
An upgrade such as a 12V smart TV with Freeview.
Air Conditioning
A caravan air con system, if one is not already fitted.
Engine Remapping
Remapping for better driving and fuel economy.
Wheelchair Access
Modifications for easy wheelchair access.
Modified VW T5 Insurance
The VW T5 range comes in many factory designs, from the panel van with no rear seats or rear side windows, mainly used for deliveries, to factory campers. Third-party conversions are also available.
If your VW has been modified, it is still possible to get insurance, but you must declare it to the broker in advance. Once you have insurance in place, do not carry out any conversion without your broker’s approval, or you risk invalidating your cover. Converting a van to a campervan is also a change of body type that must be updated on your V5C with the DVLA.
If you are working on a self build project, you need campervan conversion insurance, and the conversion should meet the DVLA motor caravan features. If you own a VW classic, look at classic campervan insurance, which is geared towards the older iconic VW models.
How to Reduce Your VW T5 Insurance
Provide safe and secure overnight parking
Where the van is kept overnight is one of the things insurers look at, so off-road and secure parking can help.
Add security to reduce the risk of theft
Check with your broker first that any immobiliser, caravan wheel lock or tracking device is one they recognise. Many insurers look for Thatcham approved security.
Keep to named drivers
Limit drivers to named ones with a clean driving history. Younger drivers usually cost more, which is why there is separate under 25 campervan insurance.
Limit the time on the road
If you can commit to an agreed low annual mileage, brokers tend to look on it favourably.
Increase your voluntary excess
A higher excess means you pay more towards a claim, but it can help bring the premium down. Only choose a level you could afford to pay.
